Band Returns from Essentially Ellington Competition |
|
Carroll High School's Jazz Band I is back from New York. The band pulled off a great performance in competition against 14 of the top jazz bands in the United States. Stephen Falkenberg came home with the award for Outstanding Bass Sound, and our band won the award for Outstanding Brass Section.
This weekend was educational and inspirational beyond measure. Students were able to ask Wynton Marsalis some great questions about music, heard phenomenal performances by some of the most talented students in the country, attended clinics with members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, played in jam sessions with other students in front of hundreds of people, heard inspiring performances by world-renowned jazz artists, and made new friends with students from around the country.
Dr. Faltys and Mr. Rhodes made the trip to support and cheer on the group, as did many parents.

The APEX PRESENTS SERIES for Spring 2010 presents The Stockton Helbing Quintet and and Southlake-Carroll Jazz Band I
Where: The Bridge at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church ( Co-sponsored by the Southlake Women's Club) on MARCH 26 at 7:00 pm
This concert includes performances by the Carroll High Scholl Jazz Band 1, David Lown, Director. The headline act, The Stockton Helbing Quartet, will feature some of North Texas' most accomplished jazz professionals. Proceeds from the concert (tickets are by donation at the door, $10 adult, $5 students, seniors and Apex members) will support Apex programming and the jazz bands at Carroll High School. The Apex Arts League is proud to display its mission for arts education with a direct contribution to assist this program.
Drummer/Composer/Producer Stockton Helbing (see http://www.stocktonhelbing.com for more) has accomplished more by the age of 29 than many musicians do in a lifetime. Stockton attended the University of North Texas where he was a member of the famous One O'clock Lab Band. Immediately after graduating from North Texas, Stockton was hired by legendary trumpet player Maynard Ferguson. Stockton spent almost four solid years touring around the world with Ferguson until the jazz legend's sudden passing in August 2006. In addition to being a featured soloist, Stockton served as Music Director, as well as Producer, for Ferguson's final, Grammy nominated studio album, The One and Only. |
